Dates Events in the Development of Happenings Arts and Literature Politics Science and Philosophy
1915 to 1929 Bauhaus Theatre, collage painting, Surrealism and other precedents to Happenings arise.

The Roaring 20's

World War I (1914-1918)

Stock market crashes - 1929 - and the Great Depression begins.

Communism gains in popularity.

1940 to 1950 Jackson Pollack creates the first "drip" paintings.  Art becomes about the process, not the product. Television is created.

 

World War II (1939-1945) The atomic bomb is created and used.
1950 to 1955 Black Mountain College is in it's final heyday, with innovations taking place in all forms of art, including, painting, collage, dance and theatre. Rock 'n Roll begins with Elvis The Cold War begins.

McCarthyism rages throughout America.

 
1959 Kaprow presents 18 Happenings in 6 Parts     NASA opens and pick the first seven astronauts.
1960 to 1965 Happenings are preformed steadily in New York and other areas by Kaprow, Dine, Oldenburg, and many others.

The Beatles

Civil Rights Movement gains momentum

Martin Luther King begins his work

1963 - Kennedy dies

The youth go wild - the fabulous sixties begin - flower power, psychedelics and free love for all.
1966 Allan Kaprow pronounces Happenings a dead art form. Human Sexual Response is published by William Masters and Virginia Johnson, introducing the world to the "G" spot. Medicare goes into effect.
