Personal Bio:
Professor Colson joined the UNT faculty in 1956. He started
the radio-television-film department and was chiefly responsible
for the establishment of the campus radio station, KNTU. He
later left the broadcast area and, after receiving his Ph.D.
in Performance Studies, he built one of the largest curriculum
in that discipline in the country -- the most extensive for
an MA degree.
Notable Activities:
He is past president of the Texas Speech Association. During
his tenure in that position he established the Texas Speech
Communication Journal and is a past chairman of the Southern
States Communication Journal and is a past chairman of
the Performance Studies Division of the American Communication
Association. In that position he organized the first "Salado" conference and edited the proceedings of that conference, Renewal
and Revision: The Future of Interpretation.
He is the recipient of the UNT Student Association's "Honor
Professor" Award and the UNT Faculty Senate's "Shelton
Excellence in Teaching" award. After his retirement he
was designated an "Honorary Alumnus" of the University
of North Texas.
He is active in the national storytelling movement. He is
co-founder of what is now the Tejas Storytelling Association,
which sponsors the annual Texas Storytelling Festival -- one
of the largest festivals in the country. He is a recipient of
the "John Henry Faulk Award," for his contribution
to the art of storytelling in the Southwest
