References reminders from APA (5th ed.)


  1. The first line of a reference is not indented; subsequent lines are.
  2. Article titles are not italicized nor or they placed in quotation marks. Capitalize only the first letter of the first word of the article title, subtitle, and proper nouns.
  3. The title of the periodical or book appears in uppercase and lowercase letters.
  4. Italicize the volume numbers of journals (sec. 4.11), and give issue numbers (not italicized) if and only if each issue of the journal begins on page 1 (see ex. #2 on p. 240).
  5. For publication information (sec. 4.14)
    * Give the name of the city and, if the city is not well known, the postal abbreviation for the state
    * For publishers, write out the names of associations, corporations, university presses, but omit terms such as Publishers, Co., or Inc. Retain the words Books and Press.
  6. If the reference was retrieved from a website, be sure to provide the date the information was retrieved. (sec. 4.15)
