Dr. Brian Lain Director of the Debate Program |
|
|
Originally from North Carolina, Professor Brian Lain
received his B. A. from Wake Forest University (1993) where he was a
Presidential Scholar, his M. A. from Wayne State University (1997), and is
currently completing his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa. Brian's
dissertation is an examination of the force and function of Japanese American
attempts to commemorate the World War II internment within contemporary American
popular and political culture. His research concerns the intersection of
textual, visual, and material rhetorical practices with the problem of race and
ethnicity as it relates to issues of nationalism, ideology, and power in the
multicultural era. As the Director of Debate, Brian brings a wealth of experience to UNT. Brian was an accomplished debater at Wake Forest University, both participating in elimination rounds and receiving first-round at-large bids ranking him in the top six teams in the nation at the National Debate Tournament two years in a row. A frequent final round participant, he either won or placed second at many tournaments including Harvard, Dartmouth, Pittsburgh, Redlands, and Northern Iowa. As a coach, Brian has had the benefit of working at three different collegiate institutions. He served as an assistant coach at Wayne State University and Emory University and the Coordinator of Forensics as well as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa. Prof. Lain has coached at least one team to a first-round at-large bid to the National Debate Tournament (an invitation only extended to 16 teams) nearly every year he has been coaching. Prof. Lain has had the privilege of working with a number of talented debaters and great thinkers. After coaching a team to defeat the University of Iowa in the final round of the 1996 National Debate Tournament (Kate Shuster and David Heidt, Emory University), Brian left Emory to become the Coordinator of Forensics at the University of Iowa where he coached next season's National Debate Tournament Top Speaker (Corey Rayburn, University of Iowa). Prof. Lain has been very active in the high school debate world. He coached at Pace Academy in Atlanta and the Charlotte Latin School in North Carolina. He served as the Policy Tab Room Director of the Harvard High School Tournament from 1996-1998. He has been active in both Atlanta's Urban Debate League and Chicago's Debate Commission. Additionally, he has worked in summer institutes and workshops at Dartmouth, Iowa, Emory, Wake Forest, and Wayne State. Many students noted that his summer lectures were the highlight of the institute. Brian is glad to have moved out of the Iowa winter to a climate more suited to SCUBA diving. |
