Application to the Master’s program in Communication Studies involves completion of two separate applications. The prospective student files an application with the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies (available on the UNT Graduate School website); the student simultaneously submits a second application to the Communication Studies Department. Only complete applications will be considered for decisions. We encourage applicants to submit their application material as early as possible.

For the Fall semester: We will begin reviewing applications for the Fall semester on February 15.

For the Spring semester: We will begin reviewing applications for the Spring semester on August 1.

Please submit the following information for evaluation by the Communication Studies Graduate Standards Committee:

1. A signed letter of application that includes a statement addressing the applicant’s purpose in undertaking graduate study in the UNT Communication Studies Department. In addition to indicating the semester and year s/he would like to enter the program, the applicant should include professional plans, career goals, and areas of research interest.

2. Academic transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate coursework.**

3. A current vita or resume that addresses each of the following areas:

a. Educational Background
b. Previous work experience
c. Publications, performances, exhibitions, or other scholarly activities
d. Previous research experience
e. Involvement in community activities

4. Two letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with the applicant’s and/or professional abilities. One letter should be from an individual at the last academic institution attended; one letter may be from a current or past employer.

5. Verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing scores on the GRE.*

6. Essay or writing sample from a junior or senior level undergraduate course or an honor’s thesis. The writing sample should demonstrate the applicant’s ability to conduct and report research.

The Department of Communication Studies conducts holistic reviews in making admissions decisions. In examining materials submitted by applicants for admission, we seek a positive indication of potential success in the program. In addition to the materials listed above, the department may consider the applicant’s potential to enhance the intellectual diversity of the department and program, potential to enhance the diversity of the university, and other factors that might provide evidence of potential success in the completion of a Master’s degree in Communication Studies.
