Admission Procedures

Admission to the Graduate Program in Communication Studies is a two-step process.  Students seeking admission should simultaneously apply to the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies and to the Department of Communication Studies.  Prospective international students should consult International Admissions prior to applying to the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies or to the Department of Communication Studies.

Application to the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies requires submission of the following materials:

An application (available at applytexas.org),

A complete set of undergraduate transcripts

GRE scores, and

An application fee.

Applications to the Department of Communication Studies should include:

  1. A signed letter of application that includes a statement addressing the applicant’s purpose in undertaking graduate study in the UNT Communication Studies Department.  In addition to indicating the semester and year s/he would like to enter the program, the applicant should include professional plans, career goals, and areas of research interest.

  2. A current vita or resume that addresses each of the following areas:

    a.      Educational background

    b.      Previous work experience

    c.      Publications, performances, exhibitions, or other scholarly activities

    d.      Previous research experience

    e.      Involvement in community activities

  3. Two letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with the applicant’s academic and/or professional abilities.  At least one letter must be from an individual at the last academic institution attended; one letter may be from a current or past employer.

  4. Verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing scores on the GRE.   GRE scores reported to the Graduate School will automatically be reported to the Department of Communication Studies.  Although students who have not submitted GRE scores to the Graduate School may enroll in communication courses, courses taken prior to the submission of GRE scores will NOT count toward a graduate degree in communication studies.

  5. Essay or writing sample from a junior- or senior-level undergraduate course or an honor’s thesis.
