Use of the word gypsy to convey an image rather than an identify an actual individual is very common among onlookers. Gypsy has come to represent anyone following a particular way of life, especially one that involves traveling about or living outside the law.

Some scholars say that gypsies were dark skinned people who came in long caravans, dragging wagons loaded with women and children. They spoke in a language that was not recognized. However, individuals sharing the ancestry and reputation of the gypsy may have almost nothing in common in visible or linguistic culture or in their way of life. Gypsies are described as being a disunited and ill-defined people (Acton, 1974).
