Vesuvius Nasby was, like Archie Bunker from All in the Family or
South Park's Cartman, a character who was created for an audience to
love to hate. Locke was lampooning Nasby's views, not
advocating them. These excerpts contain language and attitudes
that (thanks to activists like Nasby) today are considered highly racist
and offensive.
Also, modern readers should
remember that in America of the 1800s, the Republicans were the more
liberal political party. (Abraham Lincoln, for example, was a
Republican.) The Democrats were the conservatives of that time. |
