Plot Summary
The prologue humbly introduces the play. |
||
| Voluptuous (definition -- full of, characterized by, or ministering to indulgence in luxury, pleasure, and sensuous enjoyment. Gratification of the senses) Man accompanied by the silent God's Grace enters rejoicing in how good his life is -- "Who cares about Heaven if life is like this?" | ||
| Carnal Lust and Passing Luxury decide
to tempt him. They persuade Voluptuous Man to go to the Inn of Worldly Pleasures . |
||
| While Carnal Lust goes on ahead,
Passing Luxury decides to take Voluptuous Man to the
Temple of the Almighty Dollar. Voluptuous Man says he
isn't much of a church goer. Passing Luxury tells him he
should go. Church is great. There's lots of money to be
made there. They go and meet Daily Preaching (who hands out advice he's the last to adopt). |
||
| Voluptuous Man has a fall into the compost of sin as they leave, but Passing Luxury tells him he's okay. | ||
| They go to the Inn of Worldly Pleasure and talk to Ambition (a prostitute). Voluptuous Man meets and likes Ambition. They send for Lasciviousness (definition --inclined to lustfulness, wanton and lewd) and Excess . | ||
| Worldly Pretences (two party guys)
enter and do a little act introducing themselves. They
flatter Voluptuous Man. The Almighty Supreme overhears Voluptuous Man talk about abandoning God and decides to send God's Wrath to bring Voluptuous Man back into line. God's Wrath summons Day of Tribulation to aid him. |
||
| As Voluptuous Man hears Day Of
Tribulation approach, Passing Luxury, Carnal Lust and
Worldly Pretences take off. As Day Of Tribulation gets
closer, Ambition, Lasciviousness and Excess head for
friendlier climates. Voluptuous Man cries out for God's Grace who defends him against God's Wrath. God's Grace and God's Wrath fight for Voluptuous Man's soul. |
||
| Voluptuous Man repents. Almighty Supreme forgives Voluptuous Man. Voluptuous Man warns the audience not to fall into temptation as he did. |
